Thai Durian: The Leading Supplier

Thailand is firmly establishing itself as the primary supplier of durians to China, as reported by the South China Morning Post. In the second quarter of 2023, shipments of fresh Thai durians to China, the world’s biggest consumer of this distinctive fruit, saw a significant rebound following a decline earlier in the year. This resurgence is largely attributed to a seasonal harvest increase and a long-standing reputation for quality. According to data from China Customs, durian imports from Thailand reached nearly $2.67 billion, accounting for 75% of China’s total fruit imports.

Market Dynamics and Competition

In comparison to the 42.5% market share reported in the first quarter, Thailand’s durian export share to China rose significantly in the second quarter. In 2023, Thailand held 68% of China’s durian import market share. Vietnam, Thailand’s main competitor, supplied most of the remaining shipments in the second quarter. Vietnamese durians tend to be more competitive in terms of price due to lower transportation costs, facilitated by land border routes. However, Thailand’s established trade networks and consistent quality continue to give it an edge.

Factors Driving Thai Durian Popularity

The rise in Thai durian exports can be mainly attributed to the peak of the durian harvest season in the second quarter. Liang Yan, an economist at Willamette University, emphasizes Thailand’s “first mover advantage” among Chinese consumers. Additionally, the consistent flavor and strong brand recognition of Thai durians contribute to their popularity. Lim Chin Khee, an adviser with the Durian Academy, highlights that consumer preference for Thai durians during peak harvest periods is another key factor.

Economic and Cultural Significance

China, the world’s largest importer of durians, imported 1.4 million tonnes of the fruit in 2023. Durian is often referred to as the “king of fruits” and is considered a delicacy, frequently given as a gift to mark special occasions such as weddings. While Thai durians might lack the taste variety compared to others, their consistent flavor ensures that they remain a favorite among Chinese consumers.
