How to Start Seeds in Eggshells for Your Garden

Introduction to Eggshell Seed Starters

One of the first uses for eggshells in gardening is to use them to start seeds. Eggshells are free, biodegradable, and can be planted directly in the ground or in larger pots, making them excellent seed starters. This guide will help you understand how to use eggshells effectively to start your seeds.

Preparing Your Eggshells

To start seeds in eggshells, first save the egg carton as well as the eggshells. Use the largest shell portions you have; these should be at least one-half of a shell each, larger if possible. Use a nail, ice pick, or an awl to make a drainage hole in the bottom. A quarter-inch hole will suffice. Fill each shell with a quality potting medium, preferably one that does not contain a lot of large pieces like bark or wood chips.

Planting the Seeds

Plant one or two seeds per shell, following the depth indicated on the seed packet. Place the potted shells into the bottom of the egg carton. Keep in mind that eggshells are small, so you may need to “pot up” your seedlings later to ensure they have enough room to grow. Potting up helps in promoting good root growth and correcting early issues like legginess.

Transplanting the Seedlings

Once your seedlings are larger than two times the height and width of the eggshell, they should be either potted up or planted in the ground, provided the weather and conditions are right. Seedlings that do not like their roots disturbed, such as pumpkins, squashes, and sunflowers, can benefit from this method. To plant, crack the eggshell to allow the roots to expand and grow. A good squeeze of the hand should do the trick. Finally, plant the entire shell and root ball into your next pot, garden container, or directly into the ground to help reduce transplant shock.
